The Andrew Smith Construction Co. specialize in converting warehouse buildings for a use as cold and chill stores, their client Kingston Foods required distribution facilities in the Milton Keynes area and the above address was found suitable.

Difficulties arose however, in respect of off-loading and loading refrigerated trailer units, in that it was not possible to provide a conventional loading deck and the overall depth of the chill store load area was too shallow to allow through loading from the cold store to the loading bay door.

Saxon Engineers were called in and asked if a scissor lift and sealed loading bay solution could be provided within the available area and to fully comply with the food hygiene regulations.

Saxon proposed to narrow an existing warehouse door opening, to suit a standard trailer width and fit a full height, flap type dock shelter complete with a bottom draft curtain and strip curtains to prevent heat loss or gain.

A 3000kg capacity universal type scissor lift from the lorry loading range was proposed and engineered to accept standard Chep type pallets direct from the vehicle and transfer the load at right angles onto the loading area at finished floor level, with rollover protection provided by a wheel stop clearly shown in the photograph.

The handrails were the easily detachable type, to cater for abnormal load requirements, the lift was fully weathered and galvanized with the electrical components to IP65 standard, with the power pack sited remote at high level, all to facilitate a hose down regime.
