SAXON LIFTS LIMITED were approached by defence and industrial Contractors Messrs. Brown & Root Vickers Ltd, to submit a design and tender for a large stable work platform, together with two small ancillary mobile scissor lifts to provide close proximity access to a new Rolls Royce type 800 jet engine, whilst being prepared for and undergoing test.

The main platform had to raise and lower quickly to allow rapid access and when in the lowered position have a level smooth top surface, in order not to obstruct highly critical air flow measurements being taken with the R.R. aero engine on full power.

The accepted SAXON design utilised four large identical scissor lift mechanisms for the main platform, contra-opposed, mechanically and hydraulically synchronised, thus ensuring the required stability.

The hand rails are easily and quickly detachable and the two mobile scissor lifts, shown extended in the photograph, were designed to run in captive longitudinal rails on the main platform and be fully adjustable on the x,y,z axis.

A hydraulically actuated extending ladder was specially manufactured to provide direct access from the control room to the main platform, shown stowed up-right in the photograph.

The entire system was designed by SAXON’s own Engineers and manufactured in full accordance with Rolls Royce stringent quality assurance standards and installed and commissioned on programme.
